Aluminium OS: Google confirms its future operating system for PCs

Google is making its moves for 2026 with a project that could change everything in the personal computer market:
Aluminium OS .

This new operating system, now confirmed by details in job postings and internal statements, marks a clear intention to
merge the Android ecosystem with a complete PC experience . This strategy represents a major shift for the company… while also subtly signaling
the end of ChromeOS .

An operating system designed around AI

Since the Snapdragon Summit 2025 , the clues had been piling up. A job offer spotted on LinkedIn , since removed, seals the deal: Aluminium OS is indeed an OS designed from Android and conceived from the outset around artificial intelligence.

Google wants to build a platform capable of anticipating usage, powered by Gemini, to offer an experience where interactions could become more fluid and more personalized .

New ambitions for Google?

Unlike past attempts to port Android to PCs, this is no longer a simple software ”  hack  .” Indeed, Google aims to create an operating system that can compete with Windows, macOS, and even iPadOS in the tablet market.

The approach is also intriguing because of the announced segmentation: from entry-level devices to the very high-end, with a positioning that recalls the desire to conquer the heart of the modern PC market.

With a range designed to cover all formats, from simple laptops to detachable tablets, and including mini-PCs, Google seems to be thinking big…

ChromeOS is in transition; Aluminium OS is taking over.

The arrival of this new platform naturally raises questions about the future of ChromeOS . For its part, Google speaks of a smooth transition, with updates continuing for current Chromebooks.

Even better, some models could even benefit from a migration to Aluminium OS, depending on their hardware compatibility. Internally, the term ”  ChromeOS Classic  ” is already circulating, as a deliberate nod to an era that is drawing to a close.

For Google, Aluminium OS embodies the desire to offer a more modern alternative , capable of reconciling the simple philosophy of ChromeOS with the software richness of Android. The name itself, chosen in its British version ”  Aluminium ,” follows in the tradition of Google’s metallic naming conventions, while also evoking a more robust and ambitious alloy .

It remains to be seen whether this new operating system will find its place where so many other Android projects for PCs have failed. In any case, Google seems determined to make 2026 the year its ecosystem takes a significant leap forward…
